Two defining qualities of personality change:<\/p>\n

• Internal (Personal, not environmental)<\/li>\n
• Enduring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Stability and change can be viewed at three levels of analysis:<\/p>\n

  • Population level\n
    \n
    • Changes or constancies that happen to almost everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Group level\n
      \n
      • Changes or constancies that affect different groups differently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Individual difference level\n
        \n
        • Of significant interest to personality researchers!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Three forms of stability:<\/p>\n

          • Rank-order stability<\/li>\n
          • Stability of the average (mean-level)<\/li>\n
          • Personal coherence\n
            \n
            • Maintenance of rank order relative to others but changes in manifestation of traits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              (Personality profile stability could also be a form because this is often measured in research.)<\/p>\n

                • Characteristic adaptations, a person\u2019s desires, beliefs, concerns and coping mechanisms<\/li>\n
