This website is created and designed by Ming Kan. It is our pleasure to meet you all and is really a great honour to have this opportunity to introduce our Website and our Web Designer. We really appreciate him for volunteering his time to build most parts of the website from domain name registration to words and pictures composition. This gorgeous and fully functional website has certainly helped us to build a good relationship with the community at York. As for this achievement, the creativity of our web designer is greatly affirmed.

My name is Ming Kan. I felt truly honoured, thrilled, and excited about making this website. It was my dream project because I can make use of both of my mental health and computer knowledge to de-stigmatize mental illness. Thanks very much to the president of AM@Y for appreciations of my work. I felt good about myself, about life.

My journey to recovery had been a long and difficult one as I struggled many years with chronic depression. As I reflected, I believe I have been very fortunate to have a number of people who have continuously and tirelessly over time offered me care, guidance and support and they are my family, peers, social workers and doctors. With their advices and unceasing support, I have learned to accept the limits that my illness has imposed on me and to move forward by pursuing an undergraduate education majoring in Computer Studies.

For the past two years, I have worked really hard on both academic and extra-curricular volunteer activities. To date, I am happy that I have done well in my studies, and above all, I have also learned more positive ways to live healthy and well. I have actively participated in many student-led extra-curricular activities especially in the promotion of mental health among my peers by electing myself to be a Committee Executive at the Active Minds group. By being involved in a few student clubs as members and also volunteering as an executive member at ITSA (Information Technology Student Association), I gained skills in planning and organization, teamwork, leadership and time management.

By always doing my best, I strive to take learning into living and working towards meeting my set goals regardless of the many hurdles.  For instance, I found the Internet to be very interesting years ago so I enrolled myself in several different computer courses at Seneca College. With the skills I learned, building websites has become my favourite hobby. This interest in computer operation has prompted me to further enroll at York University two years ago. I have continued to put my knowledge to work by building several large website projects. I have gained plenty of web design experience through working on my sister’s company website. These experiences offered me great opportunities to be creative and to go beyond my limits. Building this website is to affirm for me that “I can, I am capable, I am good” in spite of the fact that I have lived a long time with a debilitating mood disorder. I am thankful and I am proud. I will cherish this and share my happiness with family and friends.
