For students, there are many stresses that we deal with throughout the year that can cause us to feel depressed or mentally unwell. It is very likely that a friend will be dealing with such stresses that you may not be aware of and it may affect your friendship.
What can we do if a friend is going through a tough time?
Talk the problems out. Some people are comfortable with talking out their problems, while others are not. Whatever problems that your friend is dealing with, giving them a space to talk can be effective as it will give clarity dealing with the situation.
- Go out. Have some fun. School is a stressful time for everyone and can be a t horn in our social lives. Maybe your friend needs a fun night out to re-energize, and it wouldn’t hurt for you too.
- Keep an open line of communication. Perhaps your friend does not feel comfortable talking to you about their problems. Reassuring them that you ate there for support goes a long way as it lets your· friend know that they are not alone.
- Steer your friends to people who can help and advise them. If you have talked to your friend and you are finding that you are unable to provide the support they are looking for, perhaps you know someone who can. Whether you know someone who has gone through a similar experience or you are aware of a local counseling service are.
Of course these are only some actions that can be taken. All situations and people are different, so it’s up to you to decide what course of action to take. The point is to ensure that you have done everything within reason to help your friend out. And to your friend, stay strong and hang in there.
